As-Sirāt (Arabic: الصراط, aṣ-ṣirāṭ) is a necessary evil within the cosmology of most Muslim faiths and while vital for salvation is also considered the ultimate test of both faith and purity, the good will thus pass said test and be rewarded with their stay in Jannah (Paradise/Heaven) while those who are evil in nature will instead fall into Jahannan (Hell).
Description[]
As-Sirāt is believed to be a supernatural bridge that is thinner than a strand of hair and sharper than any sword or knife, every soul must walk across this bridge to reach Paradise (though exceptionally good individuals will be mercifully moved over the bridge with no harm), most souls (even those destined for salvation) must endure at least some torment on this bridge and the fate of sinners is to be burned by the fires of Jahannan, which blaze beneath the said bridge, causing them to fall from As-Sirāt to their ultimate fate in the realm of evil.
While Jannah and Jahannan are the most famous (and agreed upon) realms there is also a Limbo-like state of existence in Islam known as A'raf, where souls who are neither evil enough for Jahannan nor pure enough for Paradise reside, it is presumed even these souls will eventually have to cross the bridge as they are noted to be the last people who are ultimately invited into Paradise by Allah's divine mercy (though it may be equally possible time spent in A'raf is sufficient).
