Destroying the Innocent

Have you any idea how much tyrants fear the people they oppress? All of them realize that one day, among their many victims, there is sure to be one who rises against them and strikes back!
~ Professor Albus Dumbledore's statement on Harry Potter regarding the fact that by destroying the innocence of those who survived his antagonism, Lord Voldemort has created many enemies, includes Harry Potter himself.

Destroying the Innocent is a scenario where a villain destroys another character's "innocence." These villains are known as Destroyers of Innocence. It is the opposite of Defending the Innocent.

An evildoer becomes a "Destroyer of Innocence" when they harm, injure or even kill a friendly, defenseless, or innocent character, traumatizing both younger audience and survivors of the crime alike. Destroying the Innocent is an event that invokes great feelings of anger and hatred by the public and marks a crossing at Moral Event Horizon. Like Moral Event Horizon, acts of destroying innocence can also insult/disturb/disgust a more sympathetic and reasonable villain that witness this event as well.

A destroyer of innocence often does not have qualities of redemption due to the fact that they are not above destroying the innocence of some innocent person. Some evildoers who created this kind of cataclysmic event in their own universe are often Pure Evil, but not all of them are necessarily one, unless if they have reached a new heinous standard in their universe. As if those who lost their innocence may turn evil themselves and potentially kill the villain in revenge is already awful, this, coupled with Moral Event Horizon, could be among telltale signs of the villain's further descent into something even more depraved than he/she already was, perhaps more than simple Pure Evils in the story he/she featured in. Should this villain eventually get their proper comeuppance, it won't be pretty (from becoming a doomed soul to be subjected with fate worse than death).

Forms of Destroying the Innocent

  • Tortured the hero, either physically or mentally, sometimes mentally breaking a hero/another character.
  • Killed many innocent people includes heroes themselves.
  • Destroyed entire environments/cities/planets/realities, especially if the said damage is intended to be irreversible.
  • Forced the heroes to watch innocent people died at their hands, no matter whether they are those whom they care about or worse, their own allies that disgusted by their actions and their own family.
  • Raped women or children for sport or other motives.
  • Turned another innocent character to the "dark side", creating either Evil vs. Evil scenario (where the victim would become an anti-hero/ruthless villain who fights against the perpetrator) or ended up became the slave/pawn of perpetrator themselves.

Lastly, the perpetrator is more than often, but not always, motivated by the deep desire to hurt the victim and take pleasure in their suffering. If done out of non malicious motives such as being misguided/manipulated by worse evil, accidental, or both won't be qualify as one. Nevertheless, the moment where the villain eventually remorseful over the deed is downright rare because as stated previously, very few of Destroyers of Innocence have redeeming qualities since majorities of them being Pure Evils/Masters of Horrors.

While Ned is imprisoned, Sansa Stark asks for Joffrey’s mercy, and he replies that her father has to confess in front of the people that he was wrong, and that he is the true King. Ned decides to accept Joffrey’s condition for the sake of his daughter. • He is also the one responsible for planning the Red Wedding with the Boltons and the Freys. This event killed the matriarch of House Stark, their eldest son and most of their allies, almost extinguing the house as the patriarch was already dead at this point. Besides being a great offence to the Westeros’s costumes a host to harm a guest while they are sharing the food and the house, the Stark children that were spread around Westeros trying to go back to their family, suddenly became orphans. One of them (Arya) was right outside the wedding when all the slaughter happened, and she saw the Lannister soldiers carrying her brother’s body and mocking him after they severed his head and replaced it with the one of his direwolf. The event deeply scared the Stark children that grieved the ruin of their family while they were still separated from each other.

Count Bleck: BLEH HEH HEH HEH! BLECK! The prophecy unfolds smoothly, thanks to the Chaos Heart. The light of each world will be snuffed out one by one...
Tippi: Why would you want to do something so...unspeakable?
Count Bleck: You QUESTION Count Bleck?! This worthless world's destruction matters not! Far better for Count Bleck to wipe it out of existence than let it remain!
Tippi: How can you say that? That's...horrible!
Count Bleck: Count Bleck scoffs at you! An insignificant Pixl lectures Count Bleck on what is right and wrong?
Tippi: This is not up for discussion! You're wrong...and sick! All living things have a heart. They're all priceless. You can't just...erase them!
Count Bleck: Of all things, you defend the heart? Nothing could be more worthless...
~ Count Bleck and Tippi.
Blumiere: Timpani! What did you do with her? I must see her!
Blumiere's Father: Still your tongue, Blumiere... Can't you see you've been duped by a dirty human? You have brought
shame to my name...and to the entire Tribe of Darkness!
Blumiere: And so what if I did? That doesn't matter to me! She's my entire world!
Blumiere's Father: Well, then it will interest you to know...that she no longer resides in this world.
Blumiere: What... What do you mean by that?!
Blumiere's Father: This is the price those who resist their own fate must pay, my son.
Blumiere: She... No... It can't be so!
Blumiere's Father: Someday you will see, Son. Our kind and humans must never mix.
~ Blumiere's father to his son when the latter asked where Timpani is.
Incentive, Jesse. Incentive. See, even if you win (and that's a mighty big if), they'll by working in the mines forever! Or, 'till they get their next best shot at competing which is still basically forever. (Olivia: No!) (Jesse: Okay, so what's your deal?) If you lose the next match and go work in my mines, then I'll let your friends go. All of them! You'll just have to stay behind in their place. I hear it's terrible working in those mines, but aren't your friends worth it? Hmm?
~ Hadrian sadistically changing his deal toward Jesse about his/her friends being able to travel back to their own world, despite the fact that Hadrian would never honor his part of the deal and send them all to his mines in the Nether anyway.
What's the matter, Batman? No witty comeback? No threat? Then I'll provide the narration... I'll begin with how I peeled back the layers of the boy's mind. Oh, he bravely tried to fight it at first. You would've been proud to see him so strong. But all too soon, the shocks and the serums took their toll, and the dear lad began to share such secrets with me. Secrets that are mine alone to know... Bruce. It's true, Batsy! I know everything. And kinda like the kid who peeks at his Christmas presents, I must admit, it's sadly anti-climactic. Behind all the sturm and bat-o-rangs, you're just a little boy in a playsuit, crying for mommy and daddy! It'd be funny if it weren't so pathetic. Oh, what the heck, I'll laugh anyway. HA HA HA HA HA HAA!
~ Joker (DC Animated Universe).
