The Dominion War was a devastating conflict that occurred in the popular sci-fi series Star Trek, being a pivotal part of the Deep Space 9 series and the grand climax of the Gamma Quadrant saga: it was the end-result of the genocidal Female Changeling's plan to conquer the Galaxy and punish her many enemies and resulted in the deaths of billions, it is also notable for being a war in which the primary antagonists (The Dominion) lost very little compared to the Federation and its allies.
The Dominion War saw many species that traditionally saw each other as enemies band together to face the might of the Dominion, thus Starfleet was aided by the Klingon Empire, the Romulan Star Empire and even the Cardassians (who would rebel against the Dominion after the Female Changeling began to bring in the Breen and expressed a desire to exterminate the Cardassians, which she ultimately acted upon in the Razing of Cardassia Prime).
The Dominion War was ultimately ended when Sector 31 introduced a biological weapon into the Great Link, causing all Founders (Changelings) to become sick and dying, at first seeking to prolong the war at all costs the Female Changeling would be convinced to end hostilities when Odo assured her the Alliance wouldn't seek to conquer the Gamma Quadrant and cured her of the infection, he also promised to cure the Great Link.
As a result the Female Changeling agreed to a written surrender, which forbid the Dominion from taking further hostile acts against the Alpha Quadrant and returning stolen worlds they occupied during the war, in addition the Female Changeling allowed herself to be taken as a prisoner, to face charges of war crimes.
However, despite the major blow of losing the Female Changeling the Dominion itself remained largely untouched in its native sector and thus in the aftermath of the war remained a fully functional super-power, albeit now limited to the Gamma Quadrant.
