The Doomsday Machine

The Doomsday Machine

The Doomsday Machine is a planet-killing machine and a titular major antagonist in the original Star Trek series episode "The Doomsday Machine" - the episode centers around the epic struggle between the crew of the Kirk-era Star Trek franchise and the Doomsday Machine, with the Federation ship doing its best to either destroy or disable the much more powerful super-weapon.

Main Canon

At the time of the discovery of this intergalactic "planet killer" in the year 2267, Captain James T. Kirk of USSS Enterprise theorized that the robotic weapon was, in fact, that: "a doomsday machine that somebody used in a war uncounted years ago. They don't exist anymore, but the machine is still destroying.".

Following the destruction of the "planet killer", Kirk noted the irony of its destruction, stating: "Way back in the 20th century, the H-bomb was the ultimate weapon, their doomsday machine, and we used something like it to destroy another doomsday machine. Probably the first time such a weapon has ever been used for constructive purposes.".

The space-faring Orion vessel's unnamed captain and his pirate crew were seized by the USS Enterprise breaking the Orion stance of neutrality in 2269 suggested converting such explosive minerals found in the surrounding asteroids into a incredibly highly destructive bomb capable of destroying both ships. That plan, however, failed, and the Orion crew was apprehended and taken into custody.

The misinformed and paranoid Klingon commander Kruge believed that Project Genesis, a forgotten and classified scientific research operation, was the Federation's attempt at creating an ultimate weapon, and described the Genesis Device as indeed a doomsday weapon.

Secondary Canon

In the MMO game, Star Trek Online, about 142 years after Kirk destroyed the first planet killer, a renegade Klingon named B'vat had constructed another planet killer to destroy all who opposed him. But thanks to the actions of a Federation crew and the honorable sacrifice of a Klingon named K'Valk, the second planet killer was destroyed.
