The Forbidden Book is a document in The Amazing World of Gumball. It is a grimoire from the Underworld that plays a crucial role in the episode titled "The Mirror," where it is used by Carrie, Gumball, and Darwin to free the Snatcher from his curse.

Appearance[]

It is a worn-down, brown, medieval-looking book with two golden clasps on its side. On its cover is a prominent, malevolent face with red, jagged eyes and a jagged, smiling mouth. When in use, the book also emits a glowing light while floating in mid-air.

Overview[]

Known Spells[]

  • Tempus fugit ("time flies"): Moves the universe forward in time at the price of the incantor's youth.
  • Beautio eterno ("eternal beauty"): Grants the target eternal beauty at the price of the incantor's life.
  • Resurrectio mortis ("resurrection of the dead"): Resurrects the target from the dead at the price of the incantor's body.
  • An unnamed spell: Allows the living to touch a ghost at the price of the incantor's freedom, resulting in a cursed life.

Spell Reversal[]

The book includes a section explaining how to reverse the unnamed spell that allows mortals to interact with ghosts. It instructs the reader to summon the ghost or victim by calling their name five times in front of a mirror. When the ghost appears in the mirror and is struck by the first light of dawn, the mirror must be shattered using the book to break the spell.

When Carrie, Gumball, and Darwin perform this in the episode, it also reverses all supernatural damage inflicted by the target (in this case, the Snatcher, freeing Gumball's family), along with any costs previously paid by the casters, though this aspect is not delineated in the text or at least not read aloud by Carrie.

Synopsis[]

There once was a young mortal man named Vladus Lokowitchki who fell in love with a beautiful ghost after glimpsing her in a mirror. All he longed for was a single kiss. He discovered a forbidden incantation in the Forbidden Book, one that allowed the living to touch the dead. The cost, however, was steep—a cursed existence. As a result, his spirit became bound to a limbo behind reflective surfaces, growing lonelier and angrier with each passing day, waiting for someone to take his place.

During the events of "The Mirror," Gumball and Darwin become targets of Vladus, now known as the Snatcher, and visit Mrs. Jötunheim, who explains the previous story to them. Later, Carrie visits the duo at their house, having recognized the Snatcher's curse from earlier in the day. She elaborates on the story by explaining that Vladus and the ghost had a child: herself. She comes equipped with the Forbidden Book, having retrieved it from the Underworld. She claims it contains a solution, but the trio must wait until sunrise.

As the Snatcher antagonizes them, Carrie reads a section aloud, which explains that they must summon Vladus to a mirror, and when the first light of dawn strikes, they must smash the mirror with the book to break the spell. Gumball briefly decides to use the book as a physical weapon against the Snatcher by smacking him in the face, but Darwin clarifies that he meant they should use the spells inside when he suggested using the book to "defend themselves." Carrie warns that the price for using the book is too high, but Gumball insists they have no choice. He casts Tempus Fugit to skip the night, but as a result, his body becomes wrinkly and frail, costing him his youth. Darwin's solution is to cast Beautio Eterno, which fails to make Gumball beautiful, instead giving him the appearance of a botched facelift. Worse still, Darwin shatters into pieces like glass, as casting the spell costs him his life. Gumball casts Resurrectio Morti to revive him, but it does so inadequately, reconstructing Darwin as a fragile, stitched-together, zombie-like figure. Afterward, Gumball's entire body disintegrates, leaving only his head, as the spell costs him his body.

In the end, Carrie summons her father to the mirror and smashes it with the book as instructed, freeing him from the curse. The book then disappears, possibly having gone through the green portal back to the Underworld.

Trivia[]

  • The book bears a resemblance to the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis from the Evil Dead franchise.
