The Golgotha Virus, better known as the G-Virus, is a mutagenic retrovirus featured since Resident Evil 2. It was first discovered by Dr. William Birkin.
History
The G-Virus was first isolated by William Birkin at the year 1988 in Lisa Trevor's body. It is likely that it have been also existing around 1960s. Due to Golgotha's regenerative effects, it was contradictory over Umbrella Corporation's plans to create a reliable bio-organic weapon that can be sold to the military, nevertheless, Oswell E. Spencer was interested due to its eugenic properties. Earlier Golgotha Virus research took place at a secret underground laboratory somewhere in France until in 1991 where the NEST's construction was completed.
Final stages of research about the virus took place in 1998 in which Umbrella abducts several locals including children at a nearby orphanage. Dr. Birkin eventually became distraught as the board of executives within the corporation are planning to seize the finished virus in the process which led to Birkin making a secret deal with US Military. Unbeknowst to him, moles from the military reported back to Umbrella HQ, thus causing an Umbrella Security Service team led by HUNK to be sent to seize the virus which ended up happening at the night of September 22 where the USS started their operation known as "NESTWRECKER" to raid NEST. During the operation, Birkin resisted, thus causing him to be fatally wounded by a USS operative (two accounts have differing variations: one was where he was shot as he accidentally drop a coffee mug that startled the USS operatives to shoot him, while the other caused the USS operatives to fire at him when he shows a pistol hidden behind his lab coat). The USS took the briefcase containing samples of the virus.
Near death, Birkin injected himself with a sample of the G-Virus, eventually mutating to become a grotesque monster known as "G". Seeking revenge against his aggressors, G annihilated nearly all of the USS operatives except HUNK, who survived and managed to recover a G-Virus sample and escape Raccoon City at September 30, 1998.
Effects and Transmission
Unlike the Tyrant Virus, which causes its human host to become infertile and can cause necrosis, the G-Virus grant its host extreme mutations and high-fertility along with asexual reproduction, notably the regenerative capabilities.
Humans infected by the Golgotha Virus are known as "G". When the G-Virus infects a human, they will infect nearby cells, becoming "G-Cells", causing them to produce more virions in order to spread throughout the host's body. The extreme mutation can not only regenerate dismembered parts of the body, but even revive the dead. However the extreme regeneration can cause the host's DNA to be re-written, leading to the grotesque physical changes of the host's body during mutation. The accelerated cell division allows the host to survive and adapt at any environment.
Aside from the regenerative properties, the host will gain notable decline on intelligence within a few days after infection, G-virus infected individuals are given the instinct to survive and reproduce by finding a host with a DNA closest to the infected.
Because of these factors, the G-Virus is generally considered to be the most dangerous bioweapon in history. While there was never a history of a viral outbreak of the virus, the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance will raise their alert level to 10 should the G-Virus is confirmed to be used in bioterrorism.
Transmission
The Golgotha Virus can be transmitted in two different ways.
The first method is injecting the virus directly into a host's body. As demonstrated when William Birkin injected himself with the G-Virus after being mortally wounded by the Umbrella Security Service operatives led by HUNK. It appears he has shown signs of mutation within seconds of being injected.
The second method includes implanting a G-embryo into a human host. G-larvae are independent on their own parents, thus not requiring one to survive. However, they need a human host to parasitize and survive regardless if it's dead or alive. Depending on how close the DNA of the host is to the G-infected, the larvae will either reject or assimilate itself inside the host. As shown with Sherry Birkin, Dr. Birkin's daughter where she was infected by her own father however, she was administered the DEVIL vaccine, eventually the vaccine prevented her mutation, although her lifelong regenerative abilities remained intact.
