Purposes

To allow the wearer to sufficiently call forth the name and power of the voodoo sky deity Damballa in order to perform certain forms of voodoo magic such as swapping souls into a different body or restoring a dead soul back to life.
To aid Charles Lee Ray/Chucky to both evade capture by the police as well as cheat death by desperately transplanting his evil spirit into a Good Guy Doll (succeeded).
To aid Chucky and Tiffany in transferring their spirits into human bodies (failed).
To allow Glen to resurrect his birth parents back to life (succeeded).

Voodoo Amulet

The Heart of Damballa is an amulet named after the voodoo sky god Damballa and it is featured in the Child's Play movie series. It is used in ritual magic even while chanting the forbidden prayer to call forth the power of Damballa.

The Heart of Damballa is a rhomboidal square-shaped necklace with a ruby gem embedded in it. Also, in Bride of Chucky, the color of the talisman was platinum, while in Seed of Chucky, it was of the bronze color. Also, as shown in Seed of Chucky, there was a metallic slab on the back of the amulet with an inscription that reads "ADE DUE DAMBALLA" and "AWAKE".

This talisman has made its first appearance in Bride of Chucky and it reappeared the last time in Seed of Chucky, though it is well known that the chant which calls Damballa's name, is used by Chucky numerous times using his knowledge of voodooism and it is able to transfer spirits into different living vessels with or without the amulet which perfects and strengthens the soul-transfering magic. Tiffany, Chucky's lover and partner in crime, later used the Heart of Damballa to finally fulfill her own dream of becoming her favorite actress Jennifer Tilly after their child Glen used the amulet to revive his long lost parents from the dead in Seed of Chucky.

In Haitian Voodoo, Damballa (also known as Damballah and Damballah Weddo) is one of the most important of all the loa (also spelled "lwa"). Damballa is the sky deity and considered the primordial creator of all life. The veve of Damballah comprises 2 serpents prominent among other emblems.

Trivia

The Heart of Damballa was seen one of the scrapped deleted scenes of Child's Play with Chucky's former mentor John Aelsop Bishop (formerly known as Doctor Death) holding the Heart placed on a staff during a voodoo ritual.
Since its debut appearance in Bride of Chucky, the amulet itself was platinum, but in Seed of Chucky, it was gold.
