The Heart of Damballa is an amulet named after the voodoo sky god Damballa and it is featured in the Child's Play movie series. This talisman has made its first appearance in Bride of Chucky and it reappeared the last time in Seed of Chucky, though it is well known that the chant which calls Damballa's name, is used by Chucky numerous times using his knowledge of voodooism and it is able to transfer spirits into different living vessels with or without the amulet which perfects and strengthens the soul-transfering magic. Tiffany, Chucky's lover and partner in crime, perform a ritual and conjured the same spell to bring Chucky back to life using her knowledge of voodoo in Bride of Chucky. She later used the Heart of Damballa to finally fulfill her own dream of becoming her favorite actress Jennifer Tilly after their child Glen used the amulet to revive his long lost parents from the dead in Seed of Chucky.

Damballa

In Voodoo, Damballa (also known as Damballah and Damballah Weddo) is one of the most important of all the loa (also spelled "lwa"). Damballa is the sky deity and considered the primordial creator of all life. The veve of Damballah comprises 2 serpents prominent among other emblems.

The Chant

Translation

The chant may appear to be French at a glance, but it is not proper French. It appears to be closer to Haitian Creole which is loosely based off of French but has been subject to and modified by other languages. Further evidence that points to its Haitian origins is the use of “Damballa”, a reference to Haitian Voodoo religion. Damballa is a snake-god and lives in the trees near springs and hence is also known as the Draper of Wood. However, all of these claims are based on speculation. Nobody knows the true translation or the meaning of Chucky’s chant including the last phrase of the incantation. It could just be gibberish.

Trivia

  • The Heart of Damballa was seen one of the scrapped deleted scenes of Child's Play with Chucky's former mentor John Aelsop Bishop (formerly known as Doctor Death) holding the Heart placed on a staff during a voodoo ritual.
  • Since its debut appearance in Bride of Chucky, the amulet itself was platinium, but in Seed of Chucky, it was gold.
  • In Child's Play, during the second version of the soul-transfer spell, one of the phrases makes a direct reference to the religion of Santeria.
