King Dedede's Hammer is the signature and main weapon of the titular King Dedede in the Kirby series.
It is a massive brown wooden hammer that Dedede is usually seen carrying and using it to either fight Kirby or whoever opposes him in any form. It has virtually appeared in every game in the series.
In the Kirby series[]
The hammer debuted alongside King Dedede in Kirby's Dream Land and is used for one his attacks, consisting of a front hammer swing downwards that will obviously hurt Kirby (which would later become his side smash in the Super Smash Bros. series). King Dedede's hammer continued appearing in most Kirby games going forwards, usually without many new attacks excluding some exceptions.
In Kirby's Dream Land 2, Dedede got the ability to toss his hammer at Kirby after being possessed by Dark Matter. In Kirby Super Star, Dedede now had an air version of his original hammer attack (which might have inspired his forward aerial in the Super Smash Bros. series). In Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, Dedede was playable for the first time in the series, his hammer can break many objects that Kirby himself can't, such as large walls or boulders, he's also able to charge his hammer but it doesn't do any extra damage.
His most commonly returning "new" attack, however, is a forwards right-handed swing to the right that was introduced in Kirby's Return to Dream Land, which is basically a stronger version of Kirby's Hammer copy ability.
Mechanical Hammer[]
In the Kirby Super Star remake Kirby Super Star Ultra, King Dedede (under the alias of "Masked Dedede") gains a new upgraded hammer known as Mechanical Hammer, it is mostly blue in color but features alternating red and yellow triangles near the head, which is silver and features King Dedede's icon on it. The handle appears longer and features a spike on the bottom of it along with one of the top of the hammer. On the back of the hammer is a jet.
With this hammer, King Dedede came with many new moves and abilities such as a long hammer twirl spin known as the "Giant Dedede Swing" (which will get him dazed for a while), set his hammer down on the ground with its spike like a stake, shoot out three missiles and spit out flames. Also the hammer can now cause Kirby to become electrified if he gets hit.
The hammer returns in Kirby: Triple Deluxe, Kirby's Blowout Blast and Kirby Battle Royale, being largely the same as Kirby Super Star Ultra.
In Kirby: Right Back at Ya![]
The hammer returns alongside King Dedede in the anime series Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, where again it's King Dedede's signature weapon, though he doesn't use as much as in the games and surprisingly not much against Kirby but rather his sidekick Escargoon, who he frequently abuses.
However, while King Dedede is the only one who uses it for the most part, Escargoon has sometimes used it to get back at the King on some rare instances, such as in the episode 55 "Sweet and Sour Puss", where he takes advantage at the fact that Dedede became incapable of getting angry (due to being possessed by an NME monster) and lashes out his bottled up anger on him with the hammer.
Kirby would sometimes inhale the hammer to gain the Hammer copy ability and use it to destroy the monster of the episode. Despite that, the hammer would reappear in the next episode as if nothing happened, which would imply that either Kirby spat out the hammer or that King Dedede has replicas of it.
It is also unknown where Dedede keeps his hammer stored, as he's frequently shown getting it from seemingly nowhere, adding to that, despite the hammer's massive size, he also seems to be able to keep it anywhere.
In the Super Smash Bros. series[]
As expected, King Dedede's trusty hammer appears alongside him in the Super Smash Bros. series where most of his moves consist of hammer related attacks, either directly or indirectly.
His side smash is taken from his original appearance in Kirby's Dream Land, his forward aerial might have been based on the air hammer swing he had in Kirby Super Star, his down smash appears to be based on Kirby's downwards hammer twirl attack from his hammer copy ability. Not only that, but he also gains new hammer related moves that weren't in the Kirby series before.
Such as the "Jet Hammer", where he charges his hammer endlessly to get a super strong attack that can kill at extremely low percetanges and the "Gordo Throw" where he tosses a Gordo with his hammer to the opponent, it can also stick to walls and be used as a trap.
The Mechanical Hammer also returns (alongside his Masked Dedede alter ego) as part of his Final Smash in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate where he is shown in the same arena as the Kirby Super Star Ultra battle quickly shooting several missiles at the opponent and then ending it with a big hammer swing.
Trivia[]
- Kirby wields a similar looking hammer while using the Hammer copy ability, only way smaller.
- It is commonly speculated that the Jet Hammer was based on Masked Dedede's Mechanical Hammer attacks, however King Dedede made his Smash debut (alongside the Jet Hammer) in Brawl which came out in 2008, the exact same year Kirby Super Star Ultra came out so the probability of this is unknown.
