M-Pox is a deadly disease in Marvel comics. This virus acts as an important plot device in X-Men versus Inhumans. It is a pestilence that contributes to the decimation of the mutant race on Earth and is the result of the mad Titan, Thanos and his rampage against the Inhuman King, Black Bolt - it is one of several pestilences unique to mutants, another infamous example being the Legacy Virus (which has since been cured due to the sacrifice of Colossus).

History[]

After Thanos went on a rampage against the Inhumans and attacked Black Bolt the Inhuman King activated a Terrigen Mist Bomb on Earth that spread the mutagenic mists across the entire planet, activating Inhuman powers in many latent carriers across the globe.

What he did not know at the time was that the Terrigen Mist had an extremely negative reaction when exposed to mutants, causing them to develop a fatal disease known as M-Pox, this coupled with a long history of devastating events (such as M-Day) put mutants on the very brink of extinction and led to open conflict between the X-Men and the Inhumans.

Ultimately, despite the emotional confrontation, the Inhuman Queen, Medusa, opted to destroy the Terrigen Mist in order to stop the M-Pox from spreading further, thus ending the conflict, though many mutants were still left dead as a result.

Many of these mutants would remain dead until the House of X event, in which mutants managed to secure their own nation and resurrection technology, allowing them to finally start to rebuild their numbers via the Resurrection Protocol.

Symptoms[]

M-Pox has a wide array of symptoms and is unique to each mutant due to the way Terrigen Mists react to each X-Gene, this also ensures a near-impossibility to find a universal cure despite several methods being found to counter it, such as mutants with healing abilities and regeneration-users such as Wolverine.

Common symptoms include coughing fits, dizziness, boils and a compromised immune system, followed by exhaustion and bleeding out, the disease also causes victims to become sterile - several also simply die near-instantly upon contact with Terrigen Mists.
