The Malevolent Doctors & Nurses

Malevolent Doctors and Nurses

Is it safe?
~ Dr. Christian Szell

Although doctors and nurses are often portrayed as caring and empathetic, many stories tell of those who use their powers only for evil. Malevolent Doctors and Nurses are a major trope in historical dramas, science fiction, and, most often, horror. They can also be dentists and veterinarians.

These medical experts' evil deeds often involve torturing people and animals to use in scientific experiments, cultivate their sadism, satisfy scientific curiosity, and/or all of the above.

They can also involve revoking privileges, using sedatives and lobotomies, and in extreme cases, cold-blooded murder.

Malevolent Doctors and Nurses often come across as Nazis, murderers, kidnappers, child abusers, and gaolers. Some of the most famous examples are Dr. Christian Szell from Marathon Man, Annie Wilkes from Stephen King's Misery and Nurse Ratched from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Next.

Whether they are carrying out evil experiments on pets or interrogating their captives in hospitals, these are the medical experts that any patient is wise to avoid the next time they are about to get a checkup or have the unhappy circumstance of being put in a psychiatric hospital.

NOTE: Not to confuse with Mad Scientists since many scientists acquire the title of “Doctor”. The characters in this category must have medical skills and abilities to treat humans or animals even if they only work with experiments. However, many Malevolent Doctors and Nurses are also Mad Scientists if they practice experimentation.
