“ | It is the night when the Celestial Moons come together in a great eclipse... that shrouds our world in darkness. The Well of Souls is the pinnacle of its terrible shadow... stirring the spirits of the deceased from their eternal rest and permitting them to roam freely within the halls of the mountain... if only for a short while. | „ |
~ The Chronicler about the Night of Eternal Darkness. |
The Night of Eternal Darkness is a cataclysmic, supernatural event that plays an eponymous central role in the videogame The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night.
This dark and celestial phenomenon when the celestial moons in perfect alignment create a great lunar eclipse, thus (presumably) causing a neverending night for a short while.
Those with evil in their hearts, cannot resist the temptation of the Well of Souls calling to them as the Night of Eternal Darkness draws near.
During the Night of Eternal Darkness, all corrupted souls and wicked spirits can escape from the eternal rest and roam within the halls of the Mountain of Malefor, also known as the "Well of Souls", until this day of darkness ends.
If a soul powerful enough were to exit from the Well, such as Malefor, then he and the evil spirits could leave and plague the realms forever.
Spyro eventually makes it to the Well of Souls, fighting Gaul's minions along the way. When he finally reaches the mountain peak, he finds himself in Gaul's throne room where the Ape King himself is waiting. Using his magical staff, Gaul renders Spyro weak and drained of his elemental powers once again. He then orders Cynder to attack Spyro, but she attacks Gaul instead, in which the Ape King knocks her out and challenges Spyro himself. During the fight, the lunar alignment begins, and the evil energy it was generating is channeled through Spyro, transforming him into Dark Spyro. Spyro then uses his immense power to kill Gaul, and leaps back into the beam of evil energy. Cynder regains consciousness and knocks Spyro out of the beam, freeing him from the moon alignment's influence. When the alignment passes, the mountain begins crumbling around Spyro, Sparx and Cynder, trapping them. Spyro then used his Time Fury/Dragon Time powers to encase them in a Time Crystal of his own creation to protect them as debris collapses around them.
Spyro, Cynder, and Sparx are later revealed to be frozen in time inside the crystal, safely unharmed within the remains of the Well of Souls. The Chronicler's voice speaks to Spyro telepathically that when he wakes up, the world becomes different as the Night of Eternal Darkness never came to be due to the lunar eclipse passes, but adds that he is not alone, he has allies. A figure is seen standing near the time crystal, revealing to be Hunter of Avalar, watching over it.
Trivia
- Something similar to the Night of Eternal Darkness happens near the end of Okami, only Yami caused the world to be shrouded in darkness, not a lunar eclipse.
